How oils affect hair Most carrier oils condition hair by lubricating and smoothing the outer cuticle. This can improve slip, softness, shine, and ease of combing while reducing friction during grooming. Different oils mainly change the weight, richness, absorption, and finish. Coconut oil is a notable exception with stronger evidence that it can penetrate the hair fiber and help reduce protein loss. These descriptions explain cosmetic performance—not hair-growth or medical treatment claims.

Sunflower Light A lightweight, smooth-spreading oil that helps soften hair and skin without adding much heaviness. A practical foundation for balanced everyday formulas. Best for: Everyday formulas. Grapeseed Light A thin, quick-spreading oil that adds slip and softness with less oily residue than heavier choices. Helps create a cleaner, lighter after-feel. Best for: Clean-feeling finish. Castor Heavy A thick, slow-moving oil that increases richness, shine, and grip. Best blended when you want more body or staying power without making the entire formula too heavy. Best for: Rich hold & shine. Coconut Medium A familiar conditioning oil that brings softness, richness, and shine. It can create a fuller, more nourishing feel in products for dry hair or skin. Best for: Dry or coarse hair. Sweet Almond Medium · Nut source A medium-weight oil with smooth glide and an easy-spreading, conditioning feel. It works well in hair and body products; its tree-nut source will be identified on the ingredient label. Best for: Hair & body. Avocado Rich · Premium A rich, substantial oil that adds cushion and a deeply conditioned feel. Well suited to products for dry skin, coarse hair, curls, and protective styling. Best for: Dry hair & skin. Apricot Kernel Premium A silky, medium-light oil that spreads easily and softens the feel of richer ingredients. Useful for smooth beard oils and body products that should feel comfortable rather than heavy. Best for: Silky formulas. Sesame Medium · Seed source A smooth oil with good glide and a lightly rich, conditioned finish. It works well in beard and body blends; its sesame source will be clearly identified on the ingredient label. Best for: Beard & body. Rice Bran Light–medium A balanced, easy-spreading oil that adds softness and body without making the formula excessively heavy. A dependable middle ground between very light and very rich oils. Best for: Balanced daily formulas. Safflower Very light A very light, fast-spreading oil that supports softness with minimal weight. Ideal when the goal is a less greasy finish for fine hair, skin, or lighter beards. Best for: Fine hair & lighter beards.

Jojoba Balanced · Premium Technically a liquid wax, jojoba adds silky slip and a polished finish without feeling excessively heavy. A stable premium choice for beard, scalp, hair, and skin formulas. Best for: Hair, scalp & beard. Argan Light · Luxury A lightweight luxury oil that improves softness, shine, and smooth glide. Especially appealing in formulas designed for coarse, curly, dry, or frizz-prone hair. Best for: Dry or textured hair. Hemp Seed Premium A medium-light conditioning oil with a natural green tone and earthy character. It gives modern plant-based formulas softness without the density of heavier oils. Best for: Modern natural formulas. Macadamia Silky · Nut source A silky premium oil that adds rich slip, softness, and shine without the stickiness of castor oil. Its tree-nut source will be identified on the ingredient label. Best for: Dry or coarse hair. Meadowfoam Seed Silky · Luxury A highly stable specialty oil with a silky, polished feel. It can improve glide and support a smoother premium finish while helping the oil blend resist oxidation. Best for: Polished premium formulas.

03 Choose your butter
Add body and richness. How butters affect the formula Cosmetic butters are plant fats that remain solid or semi-solid at room temperature. They soften hair and skin while adding body, cushion, and a protective-feeling layer that slows moisture loss. Softer butters create a creamier, richer product; firmer butters add structure and improve heat resistance. The choice also changes spreadability, drag, absorption, and the final after-feel.

Mango Butter Smooth · Premium A smooth, moderately firm butter that adds structure and softness with a less heavy feel than shea. A strong choice for a refined, easy-spreading finish. Best for dense body products and formulas needing extra structure. Kokum Butter Dry-touch · Premium A hard, dry-touch butter that improves firmness without adding as much greasiness.
